Course The Osaka Marathon course, starting in front of the Osaka Prefectural Government Building and finishing within Osaka Castle Park
[A course certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) and the World Athletics (WA) / the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS)]
Competition Rules The race will be conducted in accordance with the latest rules and regulations of the WA, the JAAF, and this event.
Since the Osaka Marathon is a Label Road Race certified by the WA, the WA Road Race Label Regulations also apply. Doping control tests will be conducted in accordance with the WA Rules. The wheelchair marathon follows the rules and regulations of the World Para Athletics (WPA) and this event.
Line-up at the Start To relieve congestion and prevent infection, a wave (corral) start will be used.
A wave-start schedule and waiting blocks will be set up according to the certified time on the record certificate (personal best time) submitted at the time of application, regardless of having JAAF membership or not. Those who have not specified a certified time on the record certificate or an estimated finish time will start from the rearmost block of the last wave. Please note that if you start from a point forward of the set wave, you will be disqualified.

(1) Invited athletes / Elite runners
(2) Those who have a personal best time (gross time or net time) (The time must be recorded at a confirmable race held within the past two years. If it is found to be a false report, the entry will be canceled.)
(3) Those who reported an estimated finish time
(4) Those who reported neither a personal best time nor an estimated finish time
Time Limits Marathon: 7 hours (The competition ends at 16:15.)
* Time limits are based on the timing of the starting gun for the first wave.
Wheelchair marathon: 2 hours and 20 minutes (The competition ends at 11:25.)
Shoes Shoes worn by JAAF member runners must conform to the new rules of the WA. Shoes may be checked after the race.
Costume-clad Participation JAAF members are prohibited from participating in the race dressed in costume. Costume-clad runners are not allowed to start from Block A regardless of having JAAF membership or not. Costumes and behavior that cause discomfort to other runners or people along the route are prohibited.
Qualifications
  • Persons born on or before April 1, 2004

  • * JAAF members must have registered for FY2022.
  • * Those who have difficulty running on their own may each be accompanied by one escort runner. (An escort runner can change only once at a designated point on the course. Running with a guide dog or any other animal is not permitted.)
  • * Those who are capable of completing the race within the race time limits
  • (3) Runners in a racing wheelchair
  • * Wheelchairs are limited to racing wheelchairs that comply with the WPA rules and regulations. The qualifying time must have been achieved and verified in a race held on or after April 1, 2020: sub 1:10 for a half marathon or sub 2:20 for a full marathon.

①General runners (individuals only): 28,620

  • * General runners will not be recruited in pairs or groups at this time.

②Runners in a racing wheelchair: 30 (not including those who have transferred their rights from the Osaka Marathon 2022)

  • * Runners in a racing wheelchair should specify the name of the competition in which they participated and their record time at the time of application.

③Civic athletes: 1,500 (on a first-come, first-served basis) (not including those who have transferred their rights from the Osaka Marathon 2022)

  • * Qualifying time set by age and gender [18 to 39 years old: 3:00 for men/3:40 for women, 40 to 49 years old: 3:10 for men/3:45 for women, 50 to 59 years old: 3:25 for men/4:00 for women, 60 to 69 years old: 3:50 for men/4:30 for women, 70-plus: 4:30 for men/5:10 for women] (gross time or net time on or after April 1, 2020 for a course certified by the JAAF or AIMS). Please refer to the qualifying time for the age group that matches your age on the day of the race.
  • * Your record certificate will be checked at the time of application for qualification screening. You must submit your record certificate as digital data (PDF/image).
  • * If you do not pass the qualification screening, you will be eligible for a drawing as a general runner (no re-entry procedure required).

④Osaka Sports Supporting Runners (400 persons each from Osaka Prefecture and Osaka City; 800 persons in total / on a first-come, first-served basis) (not including those who have transferred their rights from the Osaka Marathon 2022)

  • * Only those who donated at least 100,000 yen to the Namihaya Sports Promotion Fund (Osaka Prefecture) or the Osaka City Sports Promotion Fund (Osaka City) as a donation to Osaka Sports Supporting Runners through the Furusato Nozei Program (a charitable donation to a municipality or prefecture of one’s choice) within the application period, or those designated by the said donor. An entry fee is required separately. One person is allowed to run for each donation of 100,000 yen or more.
  • * If you use a credit card for a donation through the Furusato Nozei Program, you must apply for donation by 17:00 on October 12 (Wed.). If you use a payment slip, you must apply for donation by 17:00 on August 26 (Fri.).
  • * When it is confirmed that you have donated at least 100,000 yen, an entry code will be sent by email. Please note that if you do not complete the application procedures within the application period below, you will not be able to participate in the Osaka Marathon.

⑤Charity runners: 1,000 (on a first-come, first-served basis) (not including those who have transferred their rights from the Osaka Marathon 2022)

  • * Only those who donate at least 1,000 yen to a charitable organization (charity partner) and collect at least 69,000 yen as a donation through fundraising efforts. An entry fee is required separately.
  • * If the total donation amount does not reach the minimum donation amount (70,000 yen, including a donation of 1,000 yen made by the relevant charity runner during the fundraising period [from September 1 (Thu.), 2022 to January 24 (Tue.), 2023]), the charity runner must donate the missing amount of money himself/herself.

⑥Runners with disabilities: 50 (not including those who have transferred their rights from the Osaka Marathon 2022)

  • * Runners with disabilities must present either of the following certificates at the time of registration for the race: a physical disability certificate, a mental disability certificate, or a rehabilitation certificate.
  • * If not selected, you will be eligible for another drawing as a general runner (no re-entry procedure required).

How to Select Participants If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity, a drawing will be held. (Results will be notified by email in early October.)
(Depending on the situation, a notification may be sent to those who are additionally selected as participants.)
Please note that the applications for ③ civic athletes, ④ Osaka Sports Supporting Runners, and ⑤ charity runners will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Entry Fee Payment Those selected must complete the payment procedure by credit card on My Page after early October according to the instructions in the result notification email sent in early October.
If you do not complete the procedure by the designated date, your right will become invalid and you will not be able to participate in the race.

Awards

The awards will be granted based on the gross time as follows:

  • ◎ The top eight male and female finishers overall as well as the top eight male and female finishers in a racing wheelchair will be awarded.
  • ◎ The Civic Runner Award is granted to male and female runners finishing in first place, excluding invited athletes and elite runners.
  • ◎ The Chicago Marathon Award is granted to male and female runners who live in Osaka Prefecture and finish in first place, excluding invited athletes, elite runners, representative runners for affiliate marathons, and the Chicago Marathon Award winners at the 8th and 9th Osaka Marathons.
  • * Separately, a certificate will be sent at a later date to the top three male and female runners per five-year age bracket, excluding invited athletes, elite runners, and overall prize winners, according to their net time.
Runners’ Registration
(Osaka Marathon EXPO 2023)

Period: Two days, on February 24 (Fri.) and 25 (Sat.), 2023

Venue: INTEX Osaka

Time: 11:00 to 19:30 (last admission)

  • * Registration will not be accepted on the day of the race (Sunday, February 26).
  • * At the time of registration, identity verification will be conducted using a photo identification document, and the runner’s physical condition will be checked using a physical condition management app or other system specified by the event organizing body. Accordingly, a person other than the runner cannot register on behalf of the runner. Registration must be done by the runner in person.
  • * The details of a physical condition management app or other system will be announced at a later date.
  • * If you do not bring a photo identification document and a smartphone with a physical condition management app specified by the event organizing body, your registration will not be accepted.
  • * Runners with disabilities must bring the certificate registered at the time of application (either of a physical disability certificate, a mental disability certificate, or a rehabilitation certificate).
  • * Changes may be made, such as accepting registrations in advance.
Doping Control Doping control tests will be conducted in accordance with the latest WA Anti-Doping Rules, the World Anti-Doping Code, and the Japan Anti-Doping Code. For doping control tests carried out before or after the race, a sample of urine and/or blood will be collected. People nominated should take the test as instructed.
TUE Application Athletes who have to use prohibited substances/methods included on the Prohibited List for the purpose of treating a disease must file an application for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). For details, please refer to the websites below.

Notes for Participating in the Race
  • (1) The event organizing body will not accept applications from those who disagree with the concept of charity programs.
  • (2) Those who do not meet the qualifications cannot participate in the race. No one but the selected applicants can participate in the race.
  • (3) If the falsification of your name/qualifications/record certificate or other dishonest acts are identified, you will be disqualified and not be allowed to participate in the race. Furthermore, applications for future races will not also be allowed.
  • (4) After application, notifications will be sent to the registered email address. The event organizing body will take no responsibility if you cannot receive email messages sent by the event organizing body due to a malfunction in your device, incorrect email settings, a change in your email address or the like.
  • (5) Please use public transportation to reach the venue. Please note that the event organizing body will take no responsibility if you cannot participate in the race due to transportation delays.
  • (6) Please be sure to manage your health before participating in the race. The event organizing body will take no responsibility for any illness, including COVID-19, or accidents except for first-aid treatment. Although the event is covered by accident insurance (ex gratia payment), COVID-19 and other epidemics are outside the scope of its coverage.
  • (7) The event organizing body will take no responsibility for any loss of, theft of or damage to your belongings, including valuables and baggage.
  • (8) It is prohibited to post up or wear any designs, letters, trademarks or the like representing company names or product names, etc. for advertising purposes within the event site (including the race course).
  • (9) Usage and portrait rights of the following items belong to the event organizing body when they are used for TV broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, and printed materials published by the event organizing body: images, photographs and articles covering the race; location information; and entrants’ names, ages, addresses (prefecture or city) and records.
  • (10) Photographs of the race may be sold by a party entrusted by the event organizing body.
  • (11) For matters relating to the race, even if they are not included in the aforementioned notes, please follow instructions given by the event organizing body.
Notes for Applications
  • (1) You may be unable to apply depending on the device you are using (including OS, browser software, and network configuration). The event organizing body will take no responsibility for any delay in applications due to equipment malfunctions or other problems.
  • (2) You cannot apply for multiple application categories. If duplicate applications by the same person are found, all applications will be disqualified, and you will not be allowed to participate in the race.
  • (3) You cannot change or cancel your application for personal reasons after application. However, this does not apply to changes that can be made on My Page.
  • (4) We will not respond to any inquiries regarding application status, drawing results, and other matters.
  • (5) No receipts will be issued for the entry fee and other charges. Please use your credit card statement or bill issued by a credit card company as your receipt.
  • (6) If you wish to participate in the race as an elite runner, please apply in the category of “elite runners.”
Infection Prevention and Control Measures
  • (1) This event will be held in accordance with the Guidelines for Preventing the Spread of Infections to Resume Sports Events set by the Japan Sport Association and other relevant parties and the Guidance on the Resumption of Road Races provided by the JAAF. The race will be held with anti-virus measures in consideration of the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • (2) Participation will be refused if you do not cooperate with anti-virus measures.
  • (3) Those over the age of 65 and those with underlying diseases are at high risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19. Please make a careful decision about participating in the event.
  • (4) Those who can be vaccinated against COVID-19 should complete at least three vaccinations by two weeks before the event, in principle.
  • * You may be required to take additional measures or pay additional costs depending on the future status of the COVID-19 pandemic. For details, please refer to the websites below.

Judgment on Whether the Race Can Be Held If the safe operation of the race is judged to be difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an earthquake, a storm, a flood, or any other natural disaster, the race will be canceled. The amount of refund of the entry fee in the case of race cancellation will be determined after deducting the expenses incurred before the cancellation decision is made.
